This video explains the concepts of red tides and eutrophication, and introduces the "winter flooding" of paddy fields in Kosaji, Shiga prefecture in Japan, to maintain healthy ecosystems. Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, was affected by the red tides during the 1970s, along with the rapid economic growth. To prevent red tides reoccuring, it is important to maintain a balance of phosphorus, nitrogen, and other nutrients throughout the basin. In Kosaji, an agricultural village in the watershed of the Yasu River (the largest river flowing into Lake Biwa), the farmers and researchers undertook a project to facilitate "winter flooding" of paddy fields, which can lead to increasing the number of living creatures and to lessen the phosphorus runoff to the river. 【Chapter】 0:00 Start 0:10 Lake Biwa and the environment 1:13 What is red tide? 1:35 What is eutrophication? 3:34 Rice clutivation in Kosaji 3:40 A year of rice clutivation 5:57 Winter flooding 6:44 After winter flooding 7:33 Rihn reserch project This video was supported by the Interactive Museums program of the National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU).
