Phil Kieran has consistently underscored his status as singular if unpredictable, music visionary. Phil’s recording studio is based in Northern Ireland’s oldest movie house, the stunning art deco Strand cinema. During the two years of Covid lockdowns, Phil cocooned himself there with his synthesizers, drum machines mics and instrumentation, ready to emerge as a composer for film. Cue Nightride, is a tense, dark thriller currently on Netflix UK/IRE and Apple (US/CAN). The album Nightride Soundtrack is out on digital outlets on 6th May via Phil Kieran Recordings (PKR). The Nightride soundscape spans the palette of electronica, from synth-wave via electro to full throttle techno, mirroring the story’s dense atmosphere. After all, Phil’s aspiration was that ‘you could listen to it with your eyes closed, imagine the story and climb inside the emotions involved’. Album listeners will journey through the electro noir of the ‘Nightride Theme’, the creeping, rolling futurism of ‘The Thief’, a track already described as ‘Bladerunner-esque’ to the slowly pulsing, haunting contours of ‘It’s all Gone Wrong’ before sharpening into the stabbing synths in ‘Delorean Discord’, the chiming techno of ‘Hells Bells’ and the hi-hat heavy, meaty breaks of ‘The Magic shop’. The final track ‘All About the Balance’ by Phil’s live-act Le Carousel is part redemption song, part klaxon warning of humanity’s relationship with its planet.
