In fact, however, it is simply a sprain of the big toe joint – meaning that it is an injury to the ligaments that make up the big toe joint. Turf toe is a common injury in football, soccer, lacrosse and ultimate – all sports that are played on turf (thus the name). If the big toe joint is moved beyond its normal range of motion during activity, the ligaments surrounding the joint can be torn or stretched (a sprain of the joint). This injury often occurs during an abrupt change of direction in soccer or a tackle in football if the cleated shoe becomes too fixed to the ground.
