In this talk, Dr. Julie explores how medical errors—now the third leading cause of death in the U.S.—can be prevented through better communication. Drawing on decades of nursing experience and research, she introduces the CUSS words (Concerned, Uncomfortable, Scared, Safety Issue). This simple tool empowers families and healthcare providers to work together to prevent harm. Through real stories, she highlights how effective communication can save lives. Dr. Julie Siemers brings over 40 years of diverse nursing experience spanning practice, education, and executive leadership in healthcare. With a strong foundation in acute critical care as both a practitioner and leader, she is deeply committed to advancing patient safety. Dr. Siemers earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Touro University, Nevada, with graduate and doctoral research focused on patient safety and driving meaningful reforms in healthcare. She is also the author of "Surviving Your Hospital Stay: A Nurse Educator’s Guide to Staying Safe and Living to Tell About It," a resource designed to educate and empower patients and their families. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
