Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is divided into several distinct districts, and Island in the Sky is its most accessible and the one that I visited. This region sits atop a massive mesa, rising more than 1,000 feet above the surrounding desert. From its rim, you can take in sweeping panoramas of deep canyons carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers. The name “Island in the Sky” comes from its dramatic setting — the mesa is bordered by sheer sandstone cliffs that make it feel like a floating landmass. Scenic drives and short hikes lead to overlooks such as Mesa Arch, Grand View Point, and Green River Overlook, each offering unforgettable vistas. Unlike some of the park’s more remote districts, Island in the Sky is relatively easy to reach from Moab and is ideal for day trips. I spent 24-hours at the Park and visited the Shafer Overlook, Mesa Arch, and Murphy Trail. I invite you to join me for an exciting adventure in Utah!
