Tomorrow I am to go in for arthroscopic surgery to clean up my troublesome knee. In particular my ACL is degenerative and as a result there is a cyst that needs cleaning up to give me free range of movement. Preparing for the operation is just as important as the recovery process as the better prepared you are physically prior to the operation, the better the chances of recovery. For some time I have been using Blood Flow Restriction training to maintain muscle bulk and strength in my knee. Painful joints are hard to train on and I've found BFR to be an invaluable tool to help here. This video goes through my routine the night before the operation and an introduction on what I'll be incorporating acutely when I get home. Night & morning before surgery: 1. Pre-ischemic conditioning (passive BFR) - this has been shown to create a protective mechanism against cell injury (i.e. knee operation). 5min on & 3min off x 5 repetitions After operation: 1. Ice & compression: this will help control any swelling and pain. I'm lucky to be using a GameReady system which incorporates both ice & compression in a handy machine. 2. Nutrition: good eating is key to recovery. There are a lot of suggested supplements out in the market but I will be adding in both Fish Oils & Bone Broth. I have also taken my thigh measurements in 3 even positions along the thigh (top third, mid and bottom third) as an easy method to monitor how my muscle mass loss/recovery is going. An easy yet effective method to ensure I don't lose too much muscle bulk. Post surgery, I will be documenting the rehab process and progressions. Any questions please comment below and wish me luck.
