Although its etymology traces back to Ancient Greece, Magdalena appears in the Western Slavic languages, as well as French, Italian, Spanish, and more. Though the name is made famous by Saint Mary Magdalene, it is not inherently religious, and both the name and its diminutives (most famously Madeleine) are still used today. Our program, “The Women of Magdala,” takes the name of Magdalena and invites audiences on a sonic journey through its associated countries. Each set includes a reading of original historical fiction, which tells the story of a Magdalena (or diminutive) and her country. The full program is concert-length; for this showcase, however, we invite you to experience the journeys of Madailéin Ní Ceallaigh, representing Ireland and Scotland, and Madeleine de Valois, representing France.
