The School of Criminology and Justice Studies at UMass Lowell features a diverse faculty of 24 active members and 7 emeritus professors with expertise spanning core areas of criminal justice and security studies. The department is led by Professor and Chair April Pattavina, whose research focuses on corrections, gender-based violence, policy analysis, and technology, alongside leadership from Associate Chair Melissa Morabito (policing innovation and sexual assault), Ph.D. Program Director Jason Rydberg, and Security Studies Director James Forest (international security and terrorism). Faculty research interests encompass a wide range including policing and accountability, sex offender policy and management, terrorism and security studies, human trafficking and transnational crime, violence prevention, cybercrime and technology (Lee), courtroom decision-making, substance abuse and hidden populations, and mental health in criminal justice, with emeritus faculty including renowned scholars in domestic violence, evidence-based practice, crime and mental illness, and violence against women.
