On May 21 at 5:30pm the Athens Legislative Review Committee (LRC) will again be discussing the Public Curfew Ordinance at City Hall. Please, FILL THE ROOM! Come out to City Hall (room 301B) and show, with your presence, that you oppose this law that will hinder our First Amendment Rights, limit resident's access to public space, and open the door to harassment against homeless individuals. The LRC, which is made up of Commission members whom report back to the Mayor and Commision, summarizes the intent of the proposed law pretty well in their Agenda, "Limitations on Use of Public Right-of-Ways and Unified Government Owned Properties." A law such as this was first proposed last May by Mayor Denson in response to the successful Occupation protest by Occupy Athens protesters demanding better communication and accountability by our local government concerning the downtown Selig development. The proposed law is supposedly intended to outlaw such protests but the law would have much more dire consequences for local homeless individuals by outlawing camping, sleeping, or even laying down on public property. For this second attempt at passing this law, Flagpole reports that " County Attorney Bill Berryman offered Atlanta's "urban camping" law, which has been copied in other Georgia cities, as a model ." The National Coalition for the Homeless rates Atlanta as the Fourth Meanest City in America toward homeless individuals. Does Athens, GA really want to use the Fourth Meanest City in America as its role-model when dealing with homelessness? Members of the community are urged to attend the meeting and show they are against this law. Public input is unsurprisingly not allowed at this meeting. We will quietly protest this law with our presence. If individuals do not want to protest quietly then we suggest not disrupting the meeting but instead utilized your rights and protest outside of City Hall. The meeting will be held from 5:30-6:30pm at City Hall in room 301B.
