Trichotillomania - What Is It? | Short Documentary Trichotillomania, often shortened to “trich”, is a mental disorder characterised by an irresistible urge to pull out hair from the scalp or other places. People with this condition may feel rising tension until they pull out a hair, at which point they experience a sense of relief – but others aren’t even aware they’re doing it. It is very common and some people with trichotillomania also exhibit other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours including: skin picking, nail biting, lip/cheek biting and nose picking. The cause is not fully understood but it may be related to abnormalities in the “OCD circuit” in the brain. Self-help techniques and/or psychological therapy are usually helpful, but sometimes medication is needed to treat more persistent cases. References: Chamberlain, S. R., Menzies, L., Sahakian, B.
