Nationally ranked #1 Chase Saldate of Gilroy High dominated his way to the finals and ended it with a BANG. The future MSU Spartan kicked off the 2020 CIF Wrestling Finals against #3 seeded Rancho Bernardo's Tyler Badgett and lit the fire for an unforgettable championship round filled with multiple memorable moments in both the girls and boys finals matches. Saldate's second year coach, MMA legend Daniel Cormier had two Mustangs in the finals, one less than his first year coaching the NorCal's best program of all time. Chase catapulted his way to the top of all rankings after a runner up finish in 2019 against now 4X CIF State Champion Jesse Vasquez in the 132lb weight class. Vasquez won his fourth title in the 145lb this year and Saldate's first period pin places him on Gilroy High's growing list of state champions. "He went out there and he just owned it." Cormier commented after Saldate's win. "Chase started to do that last year, and this year he put an exclamation point on the fact that he's the best wrestler in the country at 152lb. I'm so excited for him, it really fills my heart to see him get a state championship and get his board up in our wrestling room."
