Solo Backpack to Jaques Lake and an EPIC Grizzly encounter!! July 10-11 2024 Jasper National Park

Jaques Lake is a beautiful Lake nestled in the front ranges of the Rockies. The trailhead is off the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper at the Southern end of Medicine Lake. it is 12 easy km on one of the flattest trails in the park, making it a great beginner hike or a first-time solo destination. That being said, it is also a popular place for Moose and Grizzly bears (as you will see in this video!) Be Bear aware and keep a lookout for Moose. Moose can be a very dangerous animal, especially a cow with a calf or a male in the Rutting season. The forest in the last half of the hike is old growth spruce and provides great feeding for large animals. lots of cow parsnip which grizzly bears Love. The campsite is very nice but also makes for great grazing for Bears as you will see in this video. The Grizzly encounter I had on this trip was truly epic. The key is staying calm and collective. I did not yell or scream to try and chase the bear away, it was just feeding on the grass and dandelions and dipping in the Lake to cool off. last thing I wanted to do was piss off a hungry grizzly on a hot day. reading a bear's body language is important. That being said, never let your guard down or better yet if you feel uncomfortable in a situation such as the one I experienced the other alternative is to turn back and leave. I was more concerned about the others that would be hiking in behind me as they had young kids and two dogs. Luckily the bear left before they arrived. enjoy this video and hopefully take some knowledge about Grizzly Bears, an Apex predator and one of the most misunderstood animals in North America.
