York is filled with interesting things to see. We start by walking the city walls and visiting the "Bars" (or gates). The Romans built walls here centuries ago, and remnants of their work still appear. Back into the city we visit the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, a medieval guildhall, still used today for important civic business. It wasn't all about money - these organizations also supported hospitals, education and other charities. A short walk away we visit Clifford's Tower, (or Cliffort's - depending on the source). This fortress, built on an artificial mound, has been a central military defense for about 1000 years. Of course it's changed over the centuries, and the surviving edifice looks like it could lean-over at any moment. The location makes for wonderful views of the city.
