About composer (arranger): Zdravko Švikaršič (1885–1986) was a prominent Slovenian folklorist and composer, renowned for his dedication to preserving and arranging Slovenian folk music, particularly from the Carinthian region. Born on February 13, 1885, in Žvabek (now part of Austria), Švikaršič completed his teacher training in Celovec (Klagenfurt) in 1906. He began his teaching career in Šmihel near Pliberk in 1905, later teaching in Selah near Borovlje and Jezersko. Between 1920 and 1923, he studied at the Ljubljana Conservatory, and after passing his professional exam in 1934, he taught music at various secondary schools in Kranj and Ljubljana until his retirement in 1946 . Švikaršič's most significant contribution was his work in collecting and arranging Slovenian folk songs. Between 1911 and 1913, he gathered folk songs from the Rož region and around Celovec. He is best known for his arrangements of Carinthian Slovenian folk songs, which he published in a three-volume collection titled Koroške slovenske narodne pesmi (Carinthian Slovenian Folk Songs), released in 1914 and 1921 . Most of his arrangements were for male choirs, reflecting his deep connection to choral music. His work was instrumental in preserving the musical heritage of the Carinthian Slovenes, especially during a time when their cultural expressions faced external pressures. In 1952, Švikaršič was honored as an honorary member of the Folklorist Society of the People's Republic of Slovenia. In 1958, the Slovenian Cultural Association in Celovec awarded him the "A. Šuster-Drabosnjak" recognition for his contributions to Slovenian folk music . slovenska-biografija.si His arrangements continue to be performed by various Slovenian choirs, ensuring the enduring legacy of his work in preserving and promoting Slovenian folk music.
