Watch the video as Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad explains the whole process of PIPAC (Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy) to treat abdominal cancers, when chemotherapy isn't responding well. Transcript: Greeting to you all. My name is Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad, I am the director of Surgical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon. We want to talk about a new treatment option called PIPAC- Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy. This is a new treatment that is helping a lot of patients with advanced abdominal cancers to help in palliation that is to improve the quality of life of the patient as well as the survival of the patient. So, this treatment option is used in selected patients with abdominal cancers like ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, appendicular cancer, and mesothelioma. So, when the patient is undergone multiple lines of chemotherapy and chemotherapy has stopped responding, but diseases are limited to the abdominal cavity and the patients' condition is maintained. This is a surgical procedure in which the patient is taken to the operation theatre and two laparoscopic ports are placed about 1 cm inside each and chemotherapy is spread or still into the abdominal cavity through a special pen which is used and a special injector for about 30 minutes. In this time the chemotherapy settlements on to the tumour cells in the abdomen and kills the tumour cells through direct contact. This has been shown to shrink the tumours and decrease the chance of intestinal abstractions, improve the quality of life such as pain of the patient and so on. So, this is the treatment option we are providing to patients who fit into the criteria and it is helping many patients to live a better life with advanced abdominal cancers in many instances the response is so good that we are able to actually perform surgery, later on, to remove cancer and maybe when we perform HIPAC that is Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. Thank you for your attention and I hope this video has been helpful regarding PIPAC.
