Disco in the 1980s experienced a fascinating evolution. While the late 70s marked its golden era, the early 80s saw disco facing challenges, notably the "Disco Sucks" backlash in the US, which led to its decline in mainstream popularity. However, the genre never truly vanished—it adapted and persisted. Artists and producers infused the disco spirit with funkier, more electronic sounds, setting the stage for the rise of new sub-genres. Disco splintered into styles like Hi-NRG, Boogie and early House music, each borrowing heavily from classic disco grooves and enhancing them with drum machines and electronic synthesizers. This evolution laid the foundation for much of the dance music that would follow. Culturally, disco thrived in underground spaces and communities, particularly in New York City. Clubs like Paradise Garage and the Loft—helmed by iconic DJs like Larry Levan—became cultural hubs where disco's sound evolved and continued to flourish, leaving a lasting imprint on future dance music genres. Following an incredible session with Dusty Fingers, where we explored the 70s Disco Era through its 7-inch gems, I'm excited to dive into the next chapter—Disco in the 80s—with Jake Holloway, sharing the same passion and joy for truly great music! In this two-part series, Jake from London’s legendary record shop, Love Vinyl, has accepted the challenge to stick strictly to 7-inch records for this 15-tunes session. Huge thanks to Jake for coming on board—my life in London wouldn’t have been the same without you! Jake caught the DJ bug back in 1990, playing at various college parties while studying, before setting up a successful Brazilian night while attending Brighton University. It was here where he met fellow DJ Dom Servini, which led to a long-standing friendship between the two and a renowned club night in the form of ‘Mouseorgan’, which ran for six years at The Clinic and Herbal and various other venues, as well as guest stints at Heaven, Ministry of Sound and Fabric Jake is one half of London record emporium, Love Vinyl, where he can be found three days a week. His other days are taken up by his passion for graphic design and art direction, producing artwork for a number of clients, including the influential BBE Records, Athens of the North, Osunlade’s Yoruba, Randy Muller’s Plaza Records, Super Disco Edits and Wah Wah 45s. As you’d expect from holding down such professions, he’s also an avid record collector having accumulated an enviable selection of killer tracks to draw upon when he DJs out and about in the capital. Nowadays you can find Jake playing regularly at We Out Here, Brilliant Corners, Spiritland, The Standard Hotel and Wild Canvas. #disco #boogie #boogiefunk #music #funk #vinylmix #vinylonly #boogieacrossborders #mixtape #djmix #djset #mix _____ Host by Bertrand Vraiment / jakedragons / boogieacrossborders / bertrand.vraiment All music rights are rightfully owned by their respective artists.
