This year marks the tenth anniversary of The Game Awards, and the eleventh show. Started by Geoff Keighley in 2014 as a successor to the Spike TV Video Game Awards, The Game Awards really wants to be considered "The Oscars of Video Games," and has been incredibly successful, gaining over 118 million viewers for the 2023 show alone. At the same time, The Game Awards have been met by skepticism and mockery for their entire life, that has only seemed to grow with each passing year. The Game Awards aren't going anywhere, they're extremely popular, and extremely profitable, so this year I want to take a little time to look at why The Game Awards are the way that they are. How are the awards actually decided, why are the categories so weird, exactly how much of them really is just commercials, and dare I say, are there things which The Game Awards actually does right? Join me as I think way, way, way too much about The Game Awards.
