Recorded, mixed and mastered at Beardfire Studio, Dublin. perique part 1: Acadian Dawn (00.00 - 00:57) Collonized by French settlers in the early part of the 17th century, the land of Acadia included parts of eastern Quebec, the Maritime provinces and Maine to the Kennebec River. This is where the story of 'perique' begins. perique part 2: Secrets of the Choctaw (00:57 - 01:41) The Choctaw people are descendants of the Hopewell and Mississippian cultures, who lived throughout the east of the Mississippi River valley and its tributaries. When Acadian colonists made their way into the Saint James Parish region of Louisiana in 1776 they found that the Choctaw were cultivating a unique variety of fermented tobacco. perique part 3: Chenet's Innovation (01:41 - 02:58) In 1824 a French Acadian farmer in Louisiana by the name of Pierre Chenet learned and refined the tobacco curing and fermentation techniques of the Choctaw people, using whiskey barrels and massive screw jacks to keep the leaves under intense pressure as they cure. This veriety of tobacco was dubbed 'Perique', Chenet's nickname, and became one of America's first exports, gaining popularity among pipe smokers around the world. perique part 4: Jass in the Night (02:58 - 03:38) In the late 1910s a new type of music was making waves in the United States. Originating in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was originally named 'Jass' and brought across the country by early pioneers of the genre such as The Original Dixieland Jass Band who made a series of recordings from 1917 to 1925. perique part 5: Aeon of Horus (03:38 - 04:13) By the early part of the 20th century, Chenet's Perique tobacco had become widely used in small quantities to add flavour and spice to pipe blends. One well known figure of the time showed a particular affinity for the leaf however. Occultist Aleister Crowley was known to smoke straight perique soaked in rum as he studied obscure manuscripts and delved into the secrets of ceremonial magick. perique part 6: Whispers of La Resistance (04:13 - 05:28) During the Nazi occupation of France in the second World War, a collection of underground movements sought to undermine the German presence and the compliant Vichy régime. This Resistance was made up of men and women from all walks of life and employed guerrilla warfare tactics along with the publication of alternative print media. The French Resistance would aid Ally troops behind enemy lines and played a significant role in facilitating the Allies' rapid advance through France following the invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, and the lesser-known invasion of Provence on 15 August. perique part 7: Vuillard (05:28 - 06:40) The Vuillard pipe brand was created by Henri Vuillard in the town of Saint-Claude, France where briar pipes were first designed. During the First World War these pipes were issued to soldiers by the French Millitary and became to many a symbol of courage and valour in trying times, a trusted companion through the fires of war. perique part 8: Dixieland from the Ashes (06:40 - 07:33) As the Second World War was drawing to a close, the jazz music of New Orleans experienced a revival that would take the genre in new and experimental directions, challenging listeners and providing the soundtrack to a modern America, a land of consumerism and counter-culture, big business and underground art, where the lines between organised crime and enterprize become increasingly blurred and morality is as complex and challenging as the mind-bending soundscapes of progressive jazz #progressiverock #progressivemetal #prog #jazz #metal #instrumental #frogs
