(30 Sep 1999) English/Nat VOICED BY: Richard Vaughan About 400 student threw rocks and petrol bombs at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday in protest against Canberra's role in the multinational peacekeeping force in East Timor. The U-S Embassy in the Indonesian capital also came under attack from rock-throwing protesters. Meanwhile, U-S Defence Secretary William Cohen arrived in Jakarta for talks with Indonesia's leaders. Although he said he believed Indonesia was committed to peace in East Timor, Cohen said he'd asked General Wiranto to investigate and punish those guilty of colluding in militia violence. VOICE-OVER: 0.02 At least three Indonesians were reportedly injured when a 400-strong mob attacked the Australian Embassy in downtown Jakarta. 0.10 Student protesters threw stones at the steel fence surrounding the fortified embassy grounds. 0.17 Two Australian flags were burnt, but Indonesian police only used the minimum of force as they called for the students to disperse. 0.25 Protesters chanted anti-Australian slogans and made obscene gestures. 0.28 UPSOUND 0.31 Earlier in the day, protesters at the U-S Embassy accused the United States of provoking hatred and killings among Indonesians. 0.39 Indonesia has been accused of a deliberate campaign of misinformation regarding the peacekeeping force in East Timor. 0.46 Meanwhile, a military guard of honour greeted U-S Defence Secretary William Cohen as he arrived with General Wiranto for a day of talks with Indonesian President B-J Habibie. 0.57 Cohen told Indonesian leaders that their military must support the government's policy and contribute to a peaceful solution in East Timor. 1.05 Cohen also stressed the importance of investigating and punishing those guilty of colluding in militia violence. 1.11 Although B-J Habibie holds the presidency, it's his military chief General Wiranto who is regarded as the real power in Indonesia. 1.19 After talks with human rights organisations, Cohen said the safety of the East Timorese should be a top priority. 1.26 SOUNDBITE: (English) "In all of my meetings, I stressed that the military must operate under civilian control, and it must show restraint and respect for human rights throughout Indonesia."
