Posted: December 13, 2013 in Media, People 0 He’s pretty much sat quiet for the first half of the interview, although I can’t help but think that he was looking on and listening to Blake the way a father does when he watches his son play his first game of footy. But then it’s his turn, the attention is turned to Choc and he lights up, he sits a little taller and he’s ready to go, arms crossed initially but then he drops his arms. “You’re 38….” Nicole begins. “And looking great” he interjects. We’re away. He’s asked how much longer he has in the ring, “I feel like feel like I can go as long as I want, I didn’t start boxing professionally until I was 25, so I feel like I’m still coming into my best.” Who will you face next? “I just wanna fight Yanks; I wanna wipe them off the map” Nicole raises the suggestion that somehow the Mosely fight was ‘fixed’, an interesting question that I’m sure he wasn’t expecting. He bristles, it’s clear the question has annoyed him and he gesticulates as he replies’ “Listen, the only reason they question it is because I looked so good. Against a legend and I did it so easy.” Finally, the Choc I’m familiar with, the one that polarizes the public; the one that went missing in the lead up to the fight. He’s back, and in fine form. “It doesn’t matter if I fight Floyd Mayweather and beat him, it doesn’t matter if I fight King Kong and beat him, it doesn’t matter if I fight Superman and beat him, they’re always gunna come up with some excuse, I never get the dues I deserve. I’m the best athlete ever. Ever.” What about other Australian fighters like Sakio Bika and Danny Green who have called him out? “Sakio? This is a guy who is two weights above me, a guy who doesn’t want to spar me. These guys want to use my name, Green, whoever. But if they want to fight me, come down to a catch weight and we’ll do it” However, right now his focus is on fighting overseas opponents. He mentions big fights he wants, Cotto, Alvarez, Trout, Mayweather, but it’s clear he knows that he needs mandatory defences for some of those to happen. He says he’d love to stay in Australia and bring those guys down here but that might be a tall order. “Top ten, top five, whatever, line them up.” And as quick as the interview began, it ends. People have asked me since the interview what Anthony was like in the flesh. And I can only be honest, he’s a nice guy when you speak to him, if anything he seems a little reserved which may surprise some. But once you talk about boxing, he exudes a confidence that many believe is complete cockiness. But he’s in the business of fighting; entering a ring and facing another man who wants to destroy you, cockiness/confidence is surely a necessity for most. Its my last thought as he exits the gym.
