Obecnie długość sieci trolejbusowej wynosi 37 kilometrów. Jest obsługiwana przez przedsiębiorstwo komunikacyjne Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (VBL). Kursuje na niej 7 linii trolejbusowych. W taborze trolejbusowym przeważają pojazdy szwajcarskiej marki Hess w tym dwuprzegubowe o długości 25 metrów. W 2024 roku Lucerna zamówiła w firmie Hess nowe trolejbusy. Miasto pozyska aż 53 pojazdy – 46 w wersji przegubowej zaś 7 to w wersji dwuprzegubowej. Miasto chce rozbudowywać sieć oraz wymienić 26 pojazdów przegubowych i 3 dwuprzegubowe. Część nowych pojazdów zastąpi także autobusy na niektórych trasach, m.in. na liniach 12 i 30 do wsi Littau. Na tych liniach trolejbusy będą korzystały z napędu bateryjnego. Znacząco wzrośnie zatem rola transportu trolejbusowego w mieście, gdyż istniejąca liczba pojazdów wzrośnie o prawie 40 proc. W 2010 roku Lucerna była jednym z zaledwie dwóch systemów trolejbusowych na świecie, poza Lozanną, który obsługiwał trolejbusy z przyczepami pasażerskimi. Trolleybuses were launched in the city in 1941. In 1961, the tram network in Lucerne was decommissioned and replaced by new trolleybus lines. Today, the length of the trolleybus network is 37 kilometres. It is operated by the transport company Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (VBL). It is served by 7 trolleybus lines. The trolleybus fleet is predominantly made up of Swiss-brand Hess vehicles, including double-articulated vehicles with a length of 25 metres. Lucerne ordered new trolleybuses from Hess in 2024. The city will acquire up to 53 vehicles - 46 are articulated versions and 7 are double articulated. The city wants to expand the network and replace 26 articulated and 3 double articulated vehicles.
