Awakening and the Unicorns (Advaita) Unicorns show us how the mind can imagine objects that do not exist in reality (abstractions), yet can still occupy space, attention, emotion and energy. One can think about Unicorns, talk about them, write books about them, and feel things in relation to them, but that does not change the fundamental fact — UNICORNS ARE NOT REAL. Abstractions are mental constructions and are not part of reality — they are imagination which, in some ways, can be useful, but on the other hand can create great confusion in the mind. In the same way, the “I” is an abstraction. You can think about it and have feelings about it, but it does NOT exist. The fact that there are thoughts and emotions associated with the "I" does not turn it into reality, just as thinking about or even feeling moved by unicorns does not mean they are real. After Awakening, after realizing that the “I” is not and never was real, thoughts and feelings about “I” may continue to arise, and you may even carry on long conversations about “yourself,” about your "I" But you already know that this “you,” this “I,” does not exist. Is this helpful? Does it make any difference? Let’s see... Awakening consists in “seeing” that the 'I" was a story, a fiction sustained by habit. The advantage of this recognition lies in a practical fact: living while believing in something that does not exist creates MANY problems. In psychiatry, a delusion is defined as believing something false to be true, and delusions produce real suffering. The self fits this definition: it is a shared and normalized delusion, but no less problematic for that reason. In fact, it is the most problematic of all delusions, because we inadvertently turn it into the center of our lives — I, MY thoughts, MY feelings, MY plans, MY body, MY mind, etc., etc., etc. Additionally, this delusion impacts everyday life by creating endless conflicts and frictions at the interpersonal level, including groups of “I” clashing with other groups of “I” -- wars! The fact that almost everyone shares this same delusion makes it practically invisible, but not harmless at all. Advaita shows us the way out: seeing clearly that the "I" does not exist — Awakening from the dream of the "I." However, this “seeing” does not immediately eliminate the mental and emotional habits — built over decades — of thinking and feeling in relation to “you.” In other words, Awakening does not automatically erase the tendency to think, feel, and plan around the "I," because those patterns have been reinforced countless times. What changes is that you now know that all this mental movement revolves around a fantasy — essentially no different from the fantasy of unicorns. From Awakening onward, a process of integration or “embodiment” begins. Transformation does not occur through force or denial, but through a gradual “letting go” of habits of thought, feeling, and action, through “surrender.” Taking seriously what was seen during Awakening gradually leads to withdrawing energy from fantasies about a nonexistent "I" and beginning to live without an "I" at the center of our mental experience. In the Advaita tradition it is recognized that the impact of Awakening can be minimal or immense. Everything depends on the willingness to “integrate” that understanding into daily life. Awakening by itself does not guarantee a profound change; integration is what determines its real scope.
