A video that I should have uploaded a couple of months ago but unfortunately, for one reason or another, I kept aside until today. It's basically the 'Best of' compilation about the Pre Event Tests (PET) of the 2026 World Rally Championship season-opener, the WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo, I attended last January during which the various teams were able to test the conditions of the area and the performance of the tyres on the slippery, icy French roads with the various 2026 crews. 2026 will be the last season for the current Rally1 regulations which will be replaced by the WRC27 Rally1. The Rally1 technical regulations were introduced in 2022. The main feature of this rally class was the addition of a electric power system, linked to the 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in use on the previous WRC Plus cars and able to capture energy during braking, storing it in a 3.9 kWh battery. The recovered energy was then deployed via a 100kW (134 hp) electric motor which, combined with the 380 horsepower of the combustion engine, allowed the car to have more than 500 hp available during acceleration. Unlike the push-to-pass systems of other motorsport championships with hybrid engines, drivers in WRC instead deploy the electrical energy through an automatic system dictated by pre-programmed engine maps. The use of hybrid power was discontinued in 2025 as teams felt that the cost of repairing damaged units was becoming too expensive, which allowed to simplify and lighten the cars by around 90 kilograms. So for 2025 and 2026 Rally1 were (and are) powered by the sole 1.6-liter unit which is able to produce around 380hp, but this figure could be slightly lower due to a tighter air restrictor whose diameter changes from 36 mm to 35 mm to maintain an equivalent power-to-weight ratio between the 2024 Hybrid and 2025 Non-Hybrid machines. During these testing days, the teams close a stretch of road of variable length between 2 and 5 kms and the driver goes back and forth, from one end to the other, several times on that day in various stints (more or less long, depending on what they are testing during that stint). This year I managed to attend four different Rally1 tests which the video refers to. Cars and drivers/co-drivers you're watching are: Adrien Fourmaux/Alexandre Coria, Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Jon Armstrong/Shane Byrne, Ford Puma Rally1 Sébastien Ogier/Vincent Landais, Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 Sami Pajari/Marko Salminen, Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 #WRC2026 #WorldRallyChampionship #Rally ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have to thank my friend and youtuber @Italiansupercarvideo for the great collaboration done.
