Billy Horschel Measures His Swing After Hip Surgery: GEARS Breakdown

Eight-time PGA Tour winner Billy Horschel and GEARS Founder Michael Neff met at TPC Sawgrass to measure how Billy’s swing has changed since his hip surgery six months ago. Working with coach Todd Anderson, they compared Billy’s current motion to GEARS data from three years ago to understand what has improved and what needs to be matched up. GEARS showed: -- Pelvis Turn With Irons: Billy’s pelvis depth and pelvis turn numbers with the irons were matching up well, similar turn at the top and at impact. -- Driver Pelvis Turn: With the driver, the numbers were very different. Three years ago, Billy matched his pelvis turn at the top and at impact. Today, GEARS measured about 36° at the top and 57° at impact, a difference of roughly 20°. After working through the session, the numbers moved to about 52° at the top and about 46.5° at impact, bringing them much closer together. -- Backswing vs. Downswing: Billy is turning 10–12° more into his right hip on the backswing than before the surgery. At the same time, he was turning 15–20° less through the downswing compared to a few years ago. -- Trail Arm & Handle Position: GEARS also showed the club getting too close to Billy due to increased trail-arm flexion in the downswing. Feeling a straighter trail arm and more handle width helped him turn better and get the club farther from his chest. -- Speed Changes: As they matched up the pelvis numbers and improved the handle position, Billy’s clubhead speed moved from 113–114 mph to 116–118 mph during the session.
