Japurá Japurá is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of Amazonas, in the North Region of the country. It belongs to the Mesorregion of Northern Amazonas and the microregion of the same name. According to estimates by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), its population is 9,397 inhabitants in 2024, which makes it the least populous municipality in the state. The municipality of Japurá was created by State Law No. 96 of December 19, 1955, with territory dismembered from the former district of Maraã, from the municipality of Tefé, including the subdistrict of Igualdade, and with its headquarters in Vila Bitencourt, which was then elevated to the category of city. The municipality receives its name due to the Japurá River, a tributary of the Solimões River and one of the most important rivers in the state. The Japurá River crosses the entire territory of the municipality from one end to the other, with a width of 2 kilometers. Its waters are clear, in contrast to the muddy waters of the Solimões River. The Japurá, the main access route to the municipality from which it takes its name, was one of the first Amazonian rivers to be navigated. It is said that in 1755, the judge Ribeiro Sampaio, on a ‘visit to inspect the towns’, went up the Japurá River and visited the towns of Santo Antônio and São Matias. ‘Japurá’ is the name the river has in Brazil. According to a chronicler of the time, Father José Antônio Monteiro de Noronha, Iapurá was the name the Indians gave to a soft, black dough made from certain fruits that they ate with cassava flour, and also because the Indians who once lived on the banks of the river were from the Iapurá nation. It is 952 km from the capital Manaus. Its main source of income is agriculture and fishing. The city has a lot to offer when it comes to ecotourism in its clear rivers and forests. The main geographical features are the Japurá, Puruê, Apaporis, Acanauí and Paraná rivers, where tourism is developed, especially those linked to adventure tourism due to the ease of contact with the Amazon Rainforest.
