Why are some people drawn to minimalist architecture while others prefer nostalgic rooms filled with antiques and personal artefacts? Writer and philosopher Alain de Botton believes the answer might lie deeper than taste. For many years, Alain has explored the emotional forces that shape our inner lives – from love and loss to status anxiety. Through his educational organisation, The School of Life, he has focused on wellbeing and self-understanding. Much of this thinking connects directly to the built environment. In his book The Architecture of Happiness, Alain argues that buildings are never neutral: they can steady us, unsettle us, and quietly influence who we become. In this conversation, Alain reflects on his own relationship with domestic space – and how, in many ways, he has spent a lifetime trying to recreate the modernist calm of his childhood home in Switzerland. Together, Matt and Alain explore beauty, belonging and control – and examine why so many of us turn to architecture in search of a kind of psychological skin. This is a conversation that goes to the heart of what Homing is about: how we build safety, both in the spaces around us and within ourselves. This episode was filmed at Alain’s house in North London. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:46 Defining Home 00:01:14 Changing Homes 00:02:13 Personalising the Home 00:03:39 Susceptibility to Space 00:05:19 The Dialogue Between Inner and Outer Worlds 00:06:52 Home as Extension of Self 00:08:22 Objects as Autobiography 00:09:16 Childhood Homes and Memory 00:11:23 Architectural Nostalgia 00:15:38 The Door Handle as Symbol 00:16:36 Modernism and Stereotypes 00:18:56 Can Homes Make Us Happy? 00:20:32 Architecture and Moral Values 00:21:40 The Property Ladder 00:24:04 Building and Legacy 00:25:49 Flexibility and Longevity in Architecture 00:26:40 External vs. Internal Validation in Home Design 00:28:14 Rearranging and Personal Meaning 00:29:15 Cohabitation and Aesthetic Conflict 00:31:12 Belonging and Place 00:34:25 Safety and Psychological Comfort 00:37:20 Clutter, Minimalism, and Psychological Needs 00:41:00 Routines 00:42:44 OCD, Love, and the Need for Order 00:44:03 Designing a Home Around Love 00:45:13 Living Architecture Project 00:46:14 The Importance of Experiencing Space 00:47:39 Working with Architects and Building Homes 00:48:31 The Optimism and Challenge of Building 00:50:14 Creating a Brief and Finding Inspiration 00:52:31 Lessons from Living Architecture 00:53:32 Restlessness and Moving On 00:55:10 Accepting Change in Homes and Life To hear more from us: Instagram: @homingwithmatt TikTok: @homing.with.matt Contact: Email us at hello@mattgibberd.com Matt Gibberd’s book, A Modern Way to Live, is available here: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/32017...
