“Just Friends” Composer: John Klenner (1931) Lyricist: Sam M. Lewis (1931) Arranged by: Mike Carubia Performed by the Columbia Big Band [now Patuxent Jazz Band (PJB)] Director: Matt Pisarcik Columbia Bands, Inc. Performed: June 19, 2022 Baldwin Common, Historic Savage, MD During summers, schools close down and CBB has to find somewhere new to rehearse. In an unlikely coincidence, we found Carroll Baldwin Memorial Hall in Historic Savage on the eve of their Centennial Celebration, and formed a collaborative plan for a concert series by Columbia Bands, Inc, as part of the festivities. This concert represents the beginning of a season-long collaboration between CBMH and CBI, and it was an absolute hit for everyone involved. The Band began anticipating our return to the venue as soon as we finished this concert, and we hope to share some of that enthusiasm with you! “Just Friends” is a popular jazz standard, written by Klenner & Lewis in 1931. First recorded by Red McKenzie’s orchestra in 1931, it really took off with the 1932 recording by Leonard Joy’s Orchestra featuring singer Russ Columbo. In the intervening years, such luminaries as Dizz Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Tony Bennet with Stan Getz and Herbie Hancock have all recorded versions of this seminal tune.
