Don't you love it when people examine romance languages behind an English lens? I don't. "He/she" are gendered, so neopronouns make sense in English. "Il/Elle" may be the translation for "He/She" but they're also used for animals and objects. These pronouns are a lot more complicated than "He/She" and while at first glance they may seem gendered, there are -unusual, yet correct- ways in which you could call a man "Elle" and ways in which you could call a woman "Il".
