https://albertobellone.it/en/exudativ... Age-Related Macular Degeneration, also called "AMD", is a disease that affects the macula, that is to say the central part of the retina. The macula allows detailed vision, allows us to recognize the faces of our loved ones, the letters of the alphabet, the colors of the rainbow and details of everything we observe. AMD is linked to the aging of the population and is therefore very widespread. In industrialized countries, it represents the main cause of vision loss in those over 55 years of age. The initial symptom may be blurred vision. As the disease progresses, the images become more and more distorted and clouded, up to the presence of a real black hole in the center of the visual field. The disease can be expressed in two main forms: dry and wet; these can coexist or mutate into the other. The dry form is the most frequent and represents about 85% of all cases; deposits of material called "drusen" begin to form inside the macula which, increasing in number and size, displace and destroy the tissue. Visual disturbances then appear and as the disease progresses the macula also tends to thin. The dry form of AMD can evolve into the so-called wet form: in this second form small balls of abnormal blood vessels are found below the macula and these new fragile and fenestrated vessels lose fluid and deform the profile of the macula, rapidly damaging the vision. The wet form can evolve aggressively and requires a prompt therapeutic response: a specialist visit to an ophthalmologist guarantees an early diagnosis of the disease and treatments for the wet form of AMD must be targeted and punctual. At the moment, the injections of special drugs inside the eye are able to control the evolution of the disease.
