Pre colonial and Spanish colonial periods in the Philippine literature 1. Pre-Colonial Period (BC-1534) • The evolution of Philippine literature depended on the influences of colonization and the spirit of the age. •Indigenous Philippine literature was based on traditions and customs of a particular area of the country. •The Philippines is an archipelago country, consisting several islands, (7,107 islands to be exact), and each of those islands has its specifications of cultures and traditions, bearing different set of native literature. •Ancient literatures were written on the perishable materials like dried leaves, bamboo cylinder, and bark of the trees. •Literatures were handed down to us through the word of mouth • The sources are usually the local native town folk THESE ARE THE FORMS OF OUR LITERATURE Forms 1. Oral Literature a. Riddles b. Proverbs 2. Folk Songs a. Lullabies b. Drinking Songs c. Love Songs d. Songs of Death e. Religious Songs . Folk Tales a. Myths b. Legends c. Fables d. Epics Spanish Colonial Period a. Corrido is a legendary religious narrative form that usually details the lives of saints or the history of a tradition. b. Awit is a chivalric poem about a hero, usually about a saint. It is also usually sung and used in religious processions. c. Pasyon is a narrative poem about the life of Jesus Christ, beginning from his birth and up to his death. This is usually sung during the Lenten season. Many women were trained before to perform the Pasyon. d. Cenaculo is the dramatization of the passion of Christ. It highlights the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ, and it is also done during the Lenten season. A good example is the San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites in San Fernando, Pampanga, where fervent Catholics volunteer themselves to be actually nailed to the cross to reenact the suffering of Jesus Christ. e. Moro-moro or Comedia de Capay Espada is a blood-and-thunder melodrama depicting the conflict of Christians and Muslims. It is usually about battles to the death and the proofs of faith. f. Carillo is a play that uses shadows as its main spectacle. This is created by animating figures made from cardboard, which are projected onto a white screen. Tibag is the dramatic reenactment of St. Helena’s search for the Holy Cross. St. Helena is the mother of Constantine and is oftentimes credited to have influenced her son to be the great Christian leader he is known for today. g. Duplo or Karagatan are native dramas that are connected to Catholic mourning rituals and harvest celebrations. h. Zarzuela is probably one of the most famous forms of entertainment back in the Spanish era. Zarzuelas are musical comedies or melodramas that deal with the elemental passions of human beings. Propaganda Literature These were in the forms of satires, editorials, and news articles that aimed to attack the Spanish Rule. . Revolutionary Literature Propaganda Literature The propaganda trinity is composed of Dr. Jose Rizal, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and Graciano Lopez Jaena. Examples: Graciano Lopez Jaena a. Dasalan at Tocsohan (Prayers and Jokes) c. Ang Cadaquilaan ng Dios (God’s Goodness) Propaganda Literature Examples: Dr. Jose Rizal a. Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) Revolutionary literature, these are exposes that sparked revolution and resistance in the hearts of Filipinos.
