'Greenland is not for sale': Thousands protest US pressure and Trump's tariff threats

Thousands of Greenlanders have marched across snow and ice to protest what they see as U.S. political pressure and economic coercion over Greenland’s future. In the capital Nuuk, demonstrators waved national flags and chanted “Greenland is not for sale,” reaffirming their support for self-governance and rejecting any external takeover. The protests coincided with fresh remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced new tariff threats against several European countries. From February, imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland would face a 10 percent tariff, rising to 25 percent in 2026. Trump openly linked the measures to opposition against U.S. control of Greenland, saying the tariffs would remain until a deal for the “complete and total purchase” of the territory is reached. In Denmark’s capital Copenhagen, thousands also took to the streets in solidarity with Greenland. Uagut, an association of Greenlanders in Denmark, said the demonstrations aim to defend Greenland’s democracy, sovereignty and fundamental human rights.
