New Parts: ESP8266-12F

The ESP8266-12F is a next generation embedded system, and fits under my thumb. Too small to run Linux, but big enough to be a fast WiFi connected web server and Access Point. The module has 4Mb of Flash, and the firmware makes the filesystem accessible via an admin web interface, so you can upload web content easily, and edit text files directly from any browser. The server handles multiple requests without breaking (so AJAX!) does websockets simultaneously, and can transfer large files (1.4Mb for R2D2) that are far beyond an old Arduino's capabilities. Most Impressive. At $6 each, I expect to be using a lot of these in future, if only as a way to configure complex micro-devices from nearby smartphones.
