🎉 Chingay (Singapore) Chingay Parade is Singapore’s largest street parade and multicultural festival, held every year around Chinese New Year. It features colourful floats, dancers, performers, and community groups celebrating Singapore’s diverse cultures. 🥁✨ 🧧 What “Chingay” means The word “Chingay” comes from a Hokkien term meaning “the art of costume and masquerade.” Traditionally, people dressed in elaborate costumes and performed in processions during festive celebrations. 🇸🇬 Chingay in Singapore Started in 1973 after Singapore banned firecrackers to keep Chinese New Year celebrations lively. Organised by the People's Association. Usually held at the F1 Pit Building area in recent years. 🎭 What you see at Chingay Typical highlights include: Massive illuminated floats Lion and dragon dances International and local performers Cultural dances from Chinese, Malay, Indian, and other communities Thousands of performers from community groups and schools Fireworks, LED costumes, and large-scale choreography 🌏 Why it’s famous Chingay has become one of Asia’s largest street performances, attracting visitors from around the world. 🏘️ Chingay @ Heartlands Besides the main parade, there are also neighbourhood celebrations (like Chingay East Coast) where floats and performers travel through residential areas so more residents can enjoy the festival.
