This CHAS lecture on the History of Tullow by Christopher McQuinn in St Columba's Church in Tullow took place on 21/5/2025. Chris talked about the history of Tullow and which included: The story of Tullow which has many strands, incorporating its historically important legacy of stone monuments, its position at a ford on one of Ireland’s ancient roads, and its place as a dynastic capital and as a monastic site. The development of the medieval Norman town of Tullow further underlined its role as a strategic base controlling rich agricultural hinterland, which would later become the home of many working, farming and gentry families. The fateful year of 1798 saw Tullow thrust into the national spotlight. The town emerged to become the unique birthplace of two international religious teaching congregations, the Brigidine Sisters and the Patrician Brothers. Famine years, military and political conflict are dealt with along with commercial life, sport, performing arts, and a fine infrastructure of public and voluntary service Christopher is a well-known retired teacher in Tullow. He is also a noted local historian and a regular contributor to Carloviana.
