The Head of School Annual Conversation Series on Free Speech has become a cornerstone of the school’s mission to equip students with the skills to think independently amid growing social, political, and cultural pressures. The series brings together the community for a dynamic evening of thoughtful conversation on free speech and democratic values. “At HM, we continue to drill down on teaching the skills that enable our students to think critically and independently of internal and external pressures, and this series is one way we’re reinforcing the importance of reasoned discourse,” said Head of School Dr. Kelly. The series is curated in collaboration with Professor Julian Zelizer of Princeton University, one of the nation’s foremost scholars on history and politics. Professor Zelizer not only helps select the speakers but also moderates each event, ensuring the conversations are both intellectually rigorous and accessible to a broad audience. Kathleen Kingsbury, Editor of The New York Times Opinion Section and 2015 Pulitzer Prize winner in Editorial Writing, spoke with Upper Division students and the broader HM community about the current state of journalism and how institutions like the Times need to work to build trust with their readers.
