Press people peering through gate STORYLINE: Some 800 riot police guarded the jail cell of ousted President Joseph Estrada on Friday as thousands of his supporters rallied nearby for a third straight day to demand his freedom. Police Maj. Noli Romana said the pro-Estrada rally, which started late Wednesday and peaked at more than 50-thousand people late Thursday, thinned considerably Friday morning, to about 3-thousand. Romana said about a hundred policemen were watching the rally, focused on a litter-strewn highway intersection some 5-hundred yards from the Camp Crame national police headquarters where Estrada is jailed. Romana added that the rally was peaceful. Estrada on Wednesday became the first Philippine president to be jailed for alleged corruption. He is charged with the capital offence of plunder, which means theft from the state of more than US 1 (m) million dollars. Estrada's lawyers tried Thursday to get him released and put under house arrest. The Sandiganbayan, the anti-graft court handling the case, gave lawyers until Tuesday to submit arguments. Estrada lawyer Raymond Fortun said house arrest would ease security concerns by assuaging the anger of Estrada supporters. In a statement issued from his cell Thursday, Estrada encouraged the protesters and said he prayed the gathering would remain peaceful. He told his supporters he was fine and expressed confidence he would be freed. Estrada has complained of a malfunctioning air conditioner and his spartan cell, which is next to the cell where his son Jinggoy is held on the same charge. Video footage showed a dejected-looking Estrada being led to his windowless cell Wednesday night accompanied by Jinggoy, who is mayor of a Manila suburb. A ruling is expected next week. He also commented on how the president is adjusting to his incarceration.
