Although its final years were marred by drugs and violence, for most of its life the BW Cooper projects were home to tens of thousands of New Orleans inner city youth - they celebrated in adjacent Lincoln Park, track meets, animal walks, touch football, birthday parties - But with the 70's and the 80's came the drugs and the violence and the housing projects where all but cut off from the rest of the world. By Katrina the BW Cooper projects were all but abandoned, as it became evident that the entire housing project including all the residences and the park and the adjacent Booker T Washington High School, were built atop a toxic landfill. A few families remained, but the buildings all fell into neglect. The demolition began a few years after Katrina, and the last of the original buildings are disappearing on Earhart Blvd as the city makes way for more of the plastic houses that are replacing the brick structures. There was a lot of horrific violence in this housing project, but I prefer to think back when this neighborhood was safe and inviting, and gave this kids nice memories of growing up in New Orleans . . .
