Step into the past and explore the timeless beauty of Lacock — a village that feels as though it has been preserved for centuries. With its half-timbered houses, quiet lanes, and historic stone cottages, Lacock offers a rare glimpse into medieval England and remains one of the most picturesque villages in the country. In this video, we take a walk through the heart of the village, uncovering the stories behind its remarkable preservation and the people who helped shape its history. Much of Lacock’s survival as a historic village is thanks to the National Trust, which now owns much of the village and carefully protects its historic character. At the centre of Lacock’s story stands Lacock Abbey, founded in the 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury. Over the centuries the abbey evolved from a medieval nunnery into a grand country house, later becoming the home of photographic pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot, whose early experiments helped change the way the world captures images. Today, Lacock is famous not only for its history but also for its appearance on screen. Its unspoilt streets have been used as filming locations for productions including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Downton Abbey, making the village instantly recognisable to audiences around the world. Join me as we wander through this remarkable village where history lives in every corner — a true medieval time capsule.
