Two of the greatest Muslim thinkers, Imam al-Ghazali and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, show us how to purify the heart, discipline the self, and polish the soul into a mirror that reflects the Divine. In this video, we dive into the timeless wisdom of al-Ghazali, who saw the qalb as a king within us, where desire, anger, and reason all fight for rule. Centuries later, al-Attas takes these insights further, showing how the purified intellect reflects divine light and how the seeker must guard against wealth, status, blind imitation, and sin. Along the way, we discover: The hidden faculties of the heart and how they shape perception, memory, and imagination. Al-Attas’s vision of the intellect: from potential to actual, always dependent on Divine illumination. Together, their ideas sketch the roadmap of the spiritual wayfarer: from discipline and khalwa (retreat) to fanāʾ (annihilation of the self), until the heart becomes a polished mirror, reflecting only Allah.
