Behind the Scenes Video - Permanent Steel Sheet Pile Basement Construction at Cecil Avenue, Wembley Sheet Piling (UK) LTD has successfully completed another significant project as part of the Cecil Avenue new housing, commercial, and community development in Wembley, London. This project contributes to the Wembley Housing Zone initiative, aimed at accelerating the delivery of affordable housing and civic infrastructure in Wembley Town Centre. Led by Wates Residential, this initiative aligns with the plans from the Mayor of London and Brent Council. The land for this development is located in a 7-metre sloping area, bordered by high streets, residential housing, and a secondary school. This change in topography influenced the design for the 304 homes, which include affordable housing and private sale homes. The commercial spaces along the high road feature stepped basement levels, with the main buildings rising 8-9 storeys in some areas, and shorter buildings of 5-6 storeys in others. Design and Installation of the Permanent Sheet Pile Basement Sheet Piling (UK) LTD’s in-house design team was tasked with creating a 2-storey, watertight permanent basement. Following industry guidelines from the SCI S275 Steel Intensive Basement guidance, the team designed the basement using 312 ESZ section sheet piles. The design aimed to create a structurally sound and completely watertight basement while adhering to the project’s specific challenges and requirements. In an urban environment with minimal space, Sheet Piling (UK) LTD chose a silent and vibrationless installation method. The Kowan ZU100 pile press, serviced by a Sennebogen 673R telescopic crawler crane, was used to press the sheet piles into the ground with minimal disruption. Sheet Pile Selection and Installation Process Three different lengths of ESZ Z-section sheet piles were used: ESZ19-700 (8-10 metres), ESZ24-700 (10-12 metres), and ESZ28-700 (10 metres). All sheet piles were sourced from Sheet Piling (UK) LTD’s UK stockholdings, ensuring timely availability and preventing delays from extended lead times often associated with ex-mill orders. The installation required careful management of large retained heights, reaching up to 7.6 metres in some sections. Sheet Piling (UK) LTD’s team employed temporary propping and tie-back techniques to ensure stability and prevent excessive deflection of the sheet pile walls during installation. Completion and Waterproofing of the Basement Once the sheet piles were installed, the interlocks were welded, and a profiled steel puddle plate was added at the interface of the basement slab and sheet pile wall. This created a 100% watertight basement, in compliance with industry standards. Lloyd’s accredited welding procedures were followed, and only qualified Sheet Piling (UK) LTD welders performed the work. Finally, the sheet piles were permanently propped by the basement and ground floor slab, completing the basement structure.
