A New Haven Architecture Walk

Introducing some buildings to be seen on a walk in New Haven from Wooster Square, along Chapel Street, across the Yale Campus, and ending at the Ingalls Rink. The buildings range in date from Connecticut Hall (1752) on the Yale Old Campus to the Yale Center for British Art by Louis Kahn (1974). They suggest a trajectory not only in the history of American architecture but of America itself, from the idealized Puritan civic design of nine squares (1638) to the pulling down of the Christopher Columbus statue (1892) by Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020. Along the way are to be seen Greek Revival, Egyptian Revival, Neo-Classical, 1832 commercial stoas, a 1906 Ionic temple, and a 1907 copy of the 334 BCE Lysikrates choregic monument in Athens.
