#history #napoleon #napoleonicwars The start of Suvorov's legendary Italian-Swiss campaign 1799. Italian and Swiss expedition of 1799 was a military campaign undertaken by a combined Austro-Russian army under overall command of the Russian Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov against French forces in Piedmont and Lombardy (modern Italy) and the Helvetic Republic (present-day Switzerland). The expedition was part of the Italian campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars in general, and the War of the Second Coalition in particular. Napoleon Bonaparte was at this time fighting in Egypt (Egyptian Campaign). His victories such the battle of the Pyramids were unable to calm the situation in Europe. Suvorov sought to meet Napoleon, but it was not destine to be. And while Napoleon was besieging Acre, Suvorov struck his own blow. Suvorov was confronted in Italy and Switzerland by generals of the French Republic, Napoleon's future marshals: Macdonald, Massena, Victor, Soult. For some time the French commander-in-chief was General Moreau, one of the most talented generals of France. While in Egypt, Napoleon received shocking news of Suvorov's successes in Italy, which was one reason he abandoned the army and sailed to France, where he later seized power in the Brumaire coup of November 1799. Napoleon's First Italian Campaign, considered by many to be the greatest, was quickly destroyed by Suvorov. Sources for this and the following videos: 1. "Invincible" by Boris Kipnis 2.
