Deenergizing machinery and equipment is the best way to control occupational energy. This is why LOTO is so important. It is a system that removes energy instead of bypassing it, shortcutting it or reducing it. LOTO is also quite simple to do. It usually does not take enormous amounts of time, effort or energy to deenergize equipment and machinery. My own incident could have been easily prevented in five simple ways that would have shutdown the ignition source; the furnace. Instead of having a procedure to remove the energy, I simply reduced it. The five ways to shut the furnace down were as easy as 0.02 seconds and as hard as 3 or 4 minutes.
