How quickly the past slips away. For nearly half of my 67 years, we lived without computers or cellphones. I wonder how kids today imagine society before digital electronics transformed our lives. I also wonder how inaccurate my perception of life was before planes, trains and automobiles, before television, radio and telegraph, and before indoor plumbing. It’s hard to imagine the toils of our ancestors from our vantage. In this short diary, Elizabeth Platt, sister to my great, great, great, great grandmother, helps us to bridge the generational chasm and imagine ourselves in a simpler time where in the absence of modern technology, life was anything but simple. The diary details a journey taken by Elizabeth Platt and her 66 year old mother in 1836 from New York City to Green Bay, Wisconsin and concludes with a 40 mile sleigh ride into the interior of Wisconsin to visit the Winnebago Indians. Major mishaps in their travel are detailed and there are wonderful descriptions of many towns along the way and the people they encountered. I hope that my mother who typed the text from the diary, and my father who compiled and edited the book would be pleased that the book is now available as an audio book, thanks to a reading by my wife Cathy Gittelson. In the accompanying video I have included all of the pictures and illustrations from the published book as well as many historical and current images of the locations and subject matter. Though the images may help the listener get a sense of areas of the country he or she may be unfamiliar with, the real focus are Elizabeth’s words. She writes from the heart and frequently displays her knowledge of classical poetry, mythology, Shakespeare along with a few French and Latin expressions. The book and video is divided into nine chapters. Please like the video and share it with anyone who might be interested.
