In their first term at UCL Engineering, hundreds of new undergraduate students tackle interdisciplinary, challenge- and team-based learning together as part of the IEP’s Engineering Challenges module. We caught up with Fiona Truscott, the module’s leader, who along with her cross-Faculty team was awarded the 2025 SEFI Francesco Maffioli Award of Excellence for Developing Learning and Teaching in Engineering Education (Team Award). Reflecting on the achievements recognised by the award, we ask Fiona how the module encourages students to embrace experimentation and failure so early on in their academic journeys; how she and her team coordinate effective teaching for so many students from multiple departments every year; and how she got involved. 00:00 - 00:53 Congratulations! How do you feel? 00:54 - 03:55 Origins of Engineering Challenges (Q: What is different about Engineering Challenges; what are its origins? How did you get involved?) 03:56 - 05:56 Managing its scale (Q: This module is exceptionally large - hundreds of students undertake it each autumn - with its scale commended in your nomination. Is that daunting? How are you able to deliver it?) 05:57 - 08:29 Students and embracing experimentation and failure (Q: Referring again to the nomination for this award, how do you think Engineering Challenges encourages students to 'embrace experimentation, failure and develop defensible solutions'?) 08:30 - 09:40 Do students adapt well? (Q: Do students adapt well to this style of learning? How do they get on with interdisciplinary and team-based work?) 09:41 - 12:04 Beyond maths & physics (Q: You mentioned that this module goes beyond maths and science and attracts a wide range of students, with a wide range of interests. What was the motivation behind that?) Responsibility for UCL's IEP primarily sits with the UCL Centre for Engineering Education.
