In this video, I put the Nikon ZR head-to-head with the Sony Alpha A7 IV in extreme low light to see how they truly perform. I tested both autofocus performance and noise / image quality in very dark environments, including walking away from the cameras and letting each system try to maintain focus at a distance. On paper, Nikon rates the ZR’s autofocus down to –10 EV, while Sony rates the A7 IV to around –4 EV, but user results don’t always match spec sheets, and the results here surprised me. Both cameras were set up as similarly as possible to keep the comparison fair: • Frame rate: 24 fps • Shutter speed: 1/50 for AF test & 1/25 for high iso test • Aperture: f/1.8 • ISO range tested: ISO 1600 – 32000 • Picture profile: Standard H.265 4.2.2 on Sony & Normal H.265 4.2.0 on Nikon • White balance: 4000 to 5000 K • Autofocus mode: Face/Eye AF • Lenses used: Nikon 50mm f/1.8S vs Sony 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss I walk through what I observed, where each camera shines, and where one clearly had the edge once the light got truly brutal. If you shoot: • Camping • Outdoor adventure • Night scenes • Low-light video • Documentary or run-and-gun footage …this comparison should give you a realistic idea of what to expect from each system when conditions are far from ideal.
