Spitball Example Solution - The Retaliator: A Retaliator’s purpose is to bring 6, size 9 torpedos to a fight. It is a bomber, and should be treated as a bomber for balance purposes. A great ship to compare it to is the Eclipse - another bomber that carries 2 size 9 torpedoes. In theory, this means a Retaliator is equal to three Eclipse worth of torpedo firepower, but needs a total of 5 crew to man every turret, plus a pilot for a total of 6, compared to only three pilots in the Eclipses. So why bring a single Retaliator over 3 Eclipses? Let’s assume that in a heavily contested combat zone, 1-2 Eclipse could be killed, out of a wing of 3, before delivering their payload. Being a smaller stealth ship they won’t be able to absorb as much damage as a Retaliator and have very limited weaponry for defence, making them more vulnerable to attack. To account for the potential loss rate, in reality 4-5 Eclipses would be required to match a single Retaliator for bombs on target, with the worst case requiring 5 Eclipse crew versus the 6 crew for a single Retaliator to do the same job. This does come with the added risk of “all or nothing” on the Retaliators part. So why bring a Retaliator, risking 6 character deaths and potentially no damage done, over 5 Eclipse? The answer needs to be deterrent, and that deterrent is conveniently ready to be provided by Turrets. If 2-3 turrets are able to heavily damage or kill one fighter in short order, as suggested above, a larger defensive response to kill the Retaliator is required, and is likely to cause additional fighter damage to the enemy in addition to delivering torpedoes. Add in the power of escorts to really capitalize on the scrambling and chaos caused by massive turret damage if the DPS is properly buffed, and the Retaliator begins to look like a good choice for its role.
