Wangapeka Track

The Wangapeka Track is less well known than the Heaphy Track which crosses the same mountain chain further north. It does not receive the same level of maintenance as the Heaphy but it has a charm of its own,, a good hut system and is well worth experiencing. A 3-night trip is not over-demanding but a degree of fitness is required. A fit party in long summer days could take a day less. I found the late winter visit surprisingly cold since so much of the track is in the shade of the forest .
