Why should you care about measles? Before vaccines were developed, each year almost 3 million children died around the world because of this highly-contagious infection. The number of measles cases dramatically declined after the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963, and the infection was virtually eliminated in the US by 2000. However, in 2019, there was a resurgence of measles with more than 1,300 cases in the US, mostly among the unvaccinated. Measles remains a major cause of child mortality in low- and middle-income countries.
