==HEADPHONES REQUIRED FOR THE 3D AUDIO EFFECT== ==TURN OFF WINDOWS SONIC, DOLBY ATMOS, ETC.== (IRC_1003) This is the second chapter of 2009's Mirror's Edge running with HRTF 3D Audio via OpenAL Soft. To keep it simple, HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) is a way of rendering stereo sound by simulating the way your own head (and a variety of other factors) affects the way it sounds to your ears. When done correctly, you can hear things not just to your left and right, but to the front, rear, above and below. All with just a pair of headphones! Mirror's Edge is compatible with OpenAL Soft with a few ini file tweaks. In this demonstration, you should be able to hear the helicopter flying above you in the later parts of the video, and the officers shouting from below immediately after the cutscene. HRTF is uncommon in modern games, save for a few examples: the 3D Audio mode in Battlefield V, SteamAudio in Half-Life Alyx and Escape from Tarkov, and a few games on the PS5. There are, however, a bunch of older games that you can run with HRTF enabled through tools such as OpenAL Soft and X3DAudio. Mirror's Edge is just one of them and Fallout: New Vegas is probably the best known of the bunch.
